Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between independent living and assisted living?
Independent living might be a free-standing villa or duplex-like home or in an apartment. It is just like living on your own at home, with the added comfort of security and safety. Here at Cedar Lake Village our independent living villas and apartments also come with services. They are maintenance-free and include housekeeping services. The apartments also include two meals a day: breakfast and lunch.
Assisted living comes into the picture when you need a little bit more help doing the day-to-day things in life such as dressing, grooming, bathing etc. In assisted living, the staff can also help manage medications. Here at Cedar Lake Village our assisted living residents also receive help with laundry and are provided three meals a day.
How do I know whether I or my parents need independent or assisted living?

Choosing between independent living and assisted living is a personal and family decision. The most important thing to keep in mind is to choose a place where you or your parents are in a safe and happy environment. Cedar Lake Village is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). We have all of the levels of care one could need, and all current residents have priority into higher levels of care when needed.

What does independent living and assisted living cost?

The cost of living at Cedar Lake Village depends on many factors. It is best to call CLV directly at (913) 780-9916 and speak with the marketing team.

Does Cedar Lake Village have an entrance or buy-in fee?
The Villas of Cedar Lake Village have a refundable entrance fee.
The Senior Living Apartments have the option of either paying an entrance fee or just paying a higher monthly fee.
The Assisted Living Apartments and Memory Care Apartments do not have an entrance fee or community fee.
What is an entrance fee?
An entrance fee is a larger sum of money a prospective resident puts down like a deposit when reserving a villa or apartment. The resident then chooses how much of that entrance fee they would like to receive back upon move-out: 80%, 90% or 100%. This choice then determines the amount of the resident’s monthly fees. Our residents receive their entrance fee back after move-out within 90 days.
For example, if a resident chooses to receive 80% of their entrance fee back, they will be paying less each month as compared to if they had chosen to receive 100% back. It is easiest to look at an entrance fee like a refundable deposit.
Is there a lease I must sign?

Here at Cedar Lake Village our residents do not sign a lease regardless of which senior housing option they choose. Villas, senior apartments, assisted living and memory care apartments are all month-to-month. Our residents sign an Occupancy Agreement upon move-in, which is similar to a 30-day lease that renews each time you pay your monthly fees. Residents only need to provide a 30-day notice if planning to move-out of Cedar Lake Village. A 30-day notice is not needed if the resident is in need of a higher level of care, such as assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing care.

Does Medicare or Medicaid cover my cost of living at Cedar Lake Village?

Cedar Lake Village is private-pay for all levels of care. Cedar Lake Village’s Hoeger House, our short-term in-patient therapy facility, accepts Medicare. Good Samaritan Society – Olathe, our skilled-nursing center, accepts Medicare and Medicaid.

Will my long-term care insurance plan cover my cost of living at Cedar Lake Village?

Every insurance plan is different. It depends on each individual’s policy. Cedar Lake Village suggests you meet with your or your loved one’s insurance agent to go over their policy. Cedar Lake Village will assist you by sending your insurance company the forms needed monthly for reimbursement.  If your insurance plan does cover costs, the insurance company will reimburse you.

Is Cedar Lake Village income-based?

CLV currently has 22 villas.  CLV opened the 24 private room memory care assisted living addition with a brand new Worship and Life Center in March of 2016.

I am not Lutheran. Can I still live at Cedar Lake Village? Will there be any worship services for me?

Although Cedar Lake Village is Lutheran-based through the Good Samaritan Society, CLV does not discriminate against any potential resident based on religious beliefs. People of all beliefs call us home. Many of our residents invite their own local churches and church groups in for Bible study and lunches. Residents can reserve any of our large meeting-space rooms for personal use. CLV has daily devotionals, Bible study and Sunday services. Catholic services are also offered on-site.

What are the benefits of moving into a community with the continuum of care?

Moving into a CCRC or continuing care retirement community has a multitude of benefits. First and foremost, the next level of care or assistance is available to our residents, and the resident has priority if there is a waiting list. Higher level of care units such as assisted living, memory care and skilled-nursing tend to be smaller and more in demand. Having priority into those levels of care can save you and your family a lot of stress.

What are the apartments like in independent and assisted living?
The apartments here at Cedar Lake Village, are all private apartments. In the senior living apartments we have one and two-bedroom floor plans. Every apartment has a walk-in shower with a seat. All senior living apartments come with full kitchens. All apartments have access to laundry facilities but most have washers and dryers in the apartment itself. All apartments have a balcony or patio.
In the assisted living area we have studio and one-bedroom floor plans. Each apartment comes with a small kitchenette that includes a mini-fridge/freezer combo and microwave on a wet bar area. Each apartment has one full bath with a zero-entry shower with seat. At the end of each wing, there is an outdoor seating area.
Cedar Lake Village is not a lock-down facility for independent and assisted living. Our residents may come and go as they please. When our main entrances are closed and locked at night, guests may be buzzed in by the resident over the phone or by using a code.
What is the difference between a villa and an apartment?

Villas are free-standing duplex units around the Cedar Lake Village grounds. The Villas have attached one or two-car garages and are maintenance-free. Villas receive housekeeping twice a month, whereas the apartments receive housekeeping weekly.

Meals are not included in the monthly pricing for the Villas. Villa residents may purchase meal tickets at a discounted rate from the business office. Apartment monthly fees include two meals a day: breakfast and lunch.

The emergency alert pendant system at the Villas call directly to Phillips Lifeline for emergency services. The pendant alert system in the apartments calls our assisted living staff who check on the resident first, and then the staff can call whomever necessary.

Does Cedar Lake Village allow pets?

Cedar Lake Village is pet friendly. There is a non-refundable pet deposit for up to two pets in independent living, and one pet in assisted living. Pets will go through an interview with the Senior Living Director to ensure pets are not aggressive.

What is the Adult Day Services program?
Adult day services is a program some retirement communities have where non-residents may come for a few hours out of the week and enjoy activities, meals and more.
Here at Cedar Lake Village, we have an Adult Day Services program in both our assisted living and memory care assisted living.  Participants will receive a monthly activity calendar and choose activities they would like to attend. The pricing for Adult Day Services is based on a half day, full day or extended day.  Please contact the marketing department at 913-780-9916 for more information on pricing, availability, and included services.
What is respite care?
Respite care is a short-term stay in a community for a little extra help in a situation such as a recent release from rehabilitation, caregiver vacation or to even try out a community’s senior living options.
Here at Cedar Lake Village we offer respite stays in our assisted living or memory care assisted living apartments. Respite stays are generally between 3 and 30 days. The apartment comes fully furnished and pricing includes all services and meals. Pricing is determined by service level and goes off of a daily rate. Respite residents have access to all of the amenities and services our current residents have. Respite care is a great relief for a family member who acts as a primary caregiver and is going to be busy or on vacation. The family member knows their loved one is in a safe and healthy environment. Sometimes upon release from a rehabilitation facility you might need a few more weeks of rest before returning home. Respite care can be a great option in that situation as well. Respite care is also a great way to try out our assisted living  or memory care services for a short time to see if assisted living or memory care might an option for you or your loved one.
What kind of security do you have?

Cedar Lake Village has cameras outside the facility and inside all main hallways and common areas. The security system allows us to watch the recorded security footage at anytime. Our three main entrances are locked in the evenings. Our residents use a keypad and code to come home, and guests may call the resident on the keypad and be “buzzed in”. All other doors require a building key or code to enter at all times.

Can I bring my own furniture? If so, how much?

Yes, you bring all of your own furniture from home to make your new place feel like home. How much furniture will fit depends on the style of apartment or villa you’ve chosen. You can take a look at our floor plans on our website, and try placing your furniture to see what will fit. You are also always welcome to come out and take a look at the apartment of your choice to measure and visualize your furniture in the space.

Do you cater to special diets?

We do not have specialized diets on our menu. The menus do denote however whether an item is no salt added (NSA) or spicy. Our chef also prepares one dessert each day that is sugar free. It is up to our residents to decide what is best for them and their specific dietary needs. In assisted living and memory care, the staff can help recommend specific items for the resident, per their doctor’s orders.

Do you provide transportation?

Cedar Lake Village offers transportation to all of our residents regardless of level of service Monday through Friday. There are specific times set up for doctor’s appointments, and our transportation coordinator will take residents to their appointments within a 15-mile radius of CLV. There are also scheduled shopping trips throughout the week to places such as Walmart, Price Chopper, Target, Hobby Lobby etc. You can check our activity calendar to see where our residents will go this month.
